Manyo Daishouki - Man'yo Daishouki

Japanese: 万葉代匠記 - まんようだいしょうき
Manyo Daishouki - Man'yo Daishouki

This is a commentary on the Manyoshu from the early Edo period. It was written by Keichu, at the request of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, instead of Shimokobe Choryu. The first draft was completed around the end of the Jōkyō era (1688), and with further copies and annotations given and lent by Mitsukuni, Keichu created a critical copy of the Manyoshu and continued to study the text, eventually completing the selected edition in 1690 (Genroku 3). The first draft was written in hiragana, while the selected edition was written in katakana. The comprehensive commentary outlines the titles, authors, items, geography, phonology, and pillow words of the Manyoshu, and revised the readings of about 3,000 places in the text for almost all the poems, Chinese poems, notes on titles, and tables of contents in the order of the volumes, of which about 2,000 are currently accepted as accepted theories. In addition, he made extensive references to classic texts both in Japan and abroad to clarify the meaning of the poems and the author's intentions, and added precise annotations. It is highly acclaimed alongside Sengaku's Manyoshu Commentary and Kamochi Masazumi's Kogi Manyoshu, and unlike the medieval Kokin Denju method, his modern method based on empiricism based on documents was groundbreaking in the history of classical commentary.
