A village in Kuji County, northern Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 6,725 (1995). Occupying mountainous land along the Yamada River, a tributary of the Kuji River. Since early modern times, it has been known as a major producer of Suifu tobacco, but today the area cultivated for leaf tobacco is small. The population has been declining since the 1960s. Most of the residents are part-time farmers, and many commute to nearby Hitachiota City and Hitachi City. The area from Ryujinkyo Gorge to Mt. 茨城県北部,久慈郡の村。人口6725(1995)。久慈川の支流,山田川に沿った山間地を占める。近世以来,水府タバコの主産地として知られるが,現在,葉タバコの栽培面積はわずかである。1960年代以降,人口減少がすすんでいる。兼業農家がほとんどで,近接する常陸太田市,日立市などへの通勤者が多い。竜神峡から男体山にかけての一帯は奥久慈県立自然公園に指定されている。【千葉 立也】
