...German composer. He was a member of the Mannheim School and a pupil of Stamitz, its leader. After studying in Italy, he became concertmaster of the Mannheim court orchestra after his teacher's death, and then became its music director in 1774. In 1778, he moved to Munich when the court moved. He composed many symphonies, concertos, chamber music, ballets and other works. He gave great inspiration to Mozart, who visited Mannheim in 1777-78.
