Born September 29, 1895 in Fulda, Minnesota
[Died] December 26, 1973. Chapel Hill, North Carolina. American economist. After graduating from high school, he worked in journalism, and graduated from the University of Washington in 1919. He received his PhD in mathematics from Princeton University in 1924. He became an assistant professor at Stanford University in 1924, and an associate professor in 1927. He became a professor at Columbia University in 1931, and a professor at the University of North Carolina in 1946. He contributed greatly to the study of mathematical economics, and is known for his research on the theory of duopoly in spatial markets, the application of the calculus of variations to economics, and the proposal of the principle of marginal cost pricing. He became president of the American Econometric Society in 1936. His major papers are collected in the collection The Collected Economic Articles of Harold Hotelling (1990).
