Teinosuke Kinugasa

Film director. His real name was Kogame Teinosuke. He was born on January 1, 1896 in Mie Prefecture. Influenced by his mother, he loved acting, which led him to run away from home at the age of 18, and he worked as a female actor in various Shinpa theater companies, before joining Nikkatsu Mukojima Studio in 1917 (Taisho 6). As a leading female actor, he appeared in roles such as Sasha in Tanaka Eizo's The Living Corpse (1918). In 1923, he turned to directing with Makino Films. Some of his representative works from the silent era include the unsubtitled contemporary drama A Crazy Page (1926), which he made with Kawabata Yasunari and others in the Shinkankakuha Film League, and the ambitious period drama Crossroads (1928) for the Kinugasa Film League. He traveled to Europe with the latter, paving the way for Japanese films to be acclaimed overseas (these two films were re-released in 1975 with music added). After returning to Japan, he directed the first talkie film, Chushingura (1932), the Yukinojō Henge trilogy (1935-1936) with Hayashi Chōjirō (Hasegawa Kazuo), and Summer Siege of Osaka (1937) at Shochiku. He then moved to Toho, where he showed his talents in period dramas such as Snake Princess (1940) and The Battle of Kawanakajima (1941). After World War II, he directed the satirical comedy Aru Yoru no Tonosama (The Lord of a Certain Night) (1946) and Actress (1947), which depicts the love and death of Matsui Sumako. He then moved to Daiei, where he directed Gate of Hell (1953), the first colour film produced by the company, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, among other films, before retiring in 1966. He passed away on February 26, 1982.
