However, it was early modern England that clearly institutionalized this, and since the late 17th century it has been called "poet laureate" and has been a position in the royal family. The first person to be appointed was the great poet J. Dryden during the Restoration period, but at a time when politics, faith, and literary activity were inseparably linked, Dryden, who converted to Roman Catholicism, had many political opponents, and he was removed from his position due to the political upheaval following the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
