American conductor. Born to a Polish father and an Irish mother. Grew up in London and started out as an organist. Moved to the United States in 1905 and obtained citizenship in 1915. After serving as the conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, he served as the principal conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1912 to 1938, developing the orchestra into one of the leading orchestras in the United States, while also appearing with the orchestra in films such as The Girl in the Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, and Fantasia. In 1962, he founded the American Symphony Orchestra and served as its music director until 1972. He was a pioneer who was sensitive to the trends of the times, and he actively used media such as records, radio, and movies to promote his work, and many of his works were premiered in the United States. His idea of arranging string instruments from the left hand, first and second violins, viola, and cello, is used by many orchestras today. 米国の指揮者。ポーランド人の父とアイルランド人の母の間に生まれる。ロンドンに育ちオルガン奏者として出発。1905年渡米し，1915年に市民権を得る。シンシナティ交響楽団の指揮者を経て1912年―1938年フィラデルフィア管弦楽団の常任指揮者を務め，同楽団を米国有数の管弦楽団に育成する一方，同楽団と映画《オーケストラの少女》《カーネギー・ホール》《ファンタジア》などに出演。1962年アメリカ交響楽団を創設，1972年まで音楽監督を務めた。米国初演した作品も多く，レコード，ラジオ，映画などのメディアを積極的に活用して啓蒙活動に取り組むなど，時代の動向を敏感にとらえた先覚者でもあった。弦楽器を左手から第１・第２バイオリン，ビオラ，チェロと配置したそのアイデアは，今日多くの管弦楽団に採用されている。J.S.バッハのオルガン曲などの管弦楽用編曲でも知られた。1965年に来日。→アイブズ／ロジンスキー
