...This condition is caused by various diseases in the area from the bile canaliculi to the extrahepatic biliary system. Abnormalities in the small bile ducts within the liver are called intrahepatic cholestasis, and include drug-induced liver injury and primary biliary cirrhosis, an autoimmune disease. In contrast, extrahepatic obstructive jaundice occurs when the bile duct lumen is obstructed by cholelithiasis, bile duct cancer, or pancreatic head cancer.

Bile infected with bacteria may turn green, which is due to oxidation of bile pigments. A state in which bile flow is stagnant and bile secretion is reduced is called cholestasis, and is classified as intrahepatic cholestasis when the cause is inside the liver, and extrahepatic cholestasis when the cause is outside. Examples of the former include drug-induced acute intrahepatic cholestasis, recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and primary biliary cirrhosis.
