…At that time, it was discovered that fossils of fern-like leaves and cycad-like stems and seeds were found together in the strata of the late Paleozoic Era in Europe. The affinity between ferns and gymnosperms became an issue, and it was thought that there may have been intermediate plants between ferns and cycads. This idea was supported by the discovery of ginkgo and cycad sperm by Hirase Sakugoro (1896) and Ikeno Seiichiro (1896), and H.Potonié presumed the existence of cycad ferns (1899). It was Oliver FW Oliver and Scott DH Scott (1903) who demonstrated their existence as fern seeds. …

…そのころ，ヨーロッパの古生代末期の地層からシダ状の葉，ソテツ状の幹や種子の化石が相伴って産出することが知られはじめ，シダ植物と裸子植物の類縁性が問題になり，シダとソテツの中間的植物があったのではないかと考えられるようになった。この考えは平瀬作五郎(1896)，池野成一郎(1896)によるイチョウとソテツの精子の発見により支持され，ポトニエH.Potoniéはソテツシダ類の存在を推定した(1899)。その存在をシダ種子類として実証したのが，オリバーF.W.OliverとスコットD.H.Scott(1903)である。…
