A commercial and industrial city in the Flanders region in northwest Belgium, it prospered in the Middle Ages due to its woolen textile industry and was a member of the Hanseatic League. It later declined after the center of woolen textile industry moved to the Brabant region. The old town retains the tranquil, poetic medieval atmosphere and is called the "Venice of the North."
