Bermudo, J.

...In Spain, music was written entirely by numbers, as in the system developed by Antonio de Cabezón (c. 1510-66), who assigned the numbers 1 to 7 to the white keys from F to E, with special symbols for the octaves and altered notes, and indicated each voice on a line of the staff for each voice. There was also a system developed by Juan Bermudo (c. 1510-65), who assigned the numbers 1 to 42 to all the keys in order from low to high, or who similarly assigned the numbers 1 to 23 to the white keys only, with altered notes indicated by symbols.
[Modern Staff Notation]
In the 15th and 16th centuries, blank notation and tablature were the predominant styles used in Europe, but from the 15th century onwards in France and Italy a form of notation called intavolatura for keyboard music, which is very close to modern staff notation, was used.
