A colloquial name for the area in the center of London, the capital of the United Kingdom, from the west side of the City to Hyde Park. Located on the north bank of the River Thames, it is home to the busiest shopping districts in London. Among its most famous areas are Oxford Street, a shopping street that runs from east to west; Soho, an international entertainment district located just south of Oxford Street; Bond Street and Regent Street, famous for their luxury shopping streets; Piccadilly Circus, which is the center of these shopping districts; and Trafalgar Square, located at the southern end of the shopping district. There are also many cultural and educational facilities in the area, such as the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum, the Museum of Man, the headquarters of the University of London, and the Royal Opera House. The Mayfair district at the western end was once a top residential area, but today it is home to many first-class hotels, embassies, and offices. To the south is the former Westminster district, the political center where Parliament, government offices, Buckingham Palace, and other facilities are located.
