Desiccated thyroid

...When the chemical nature of hormones was unknown and it was difficult to separate and purify them, dried powders and crude extracts of various endocrine organs were used. Dried thyroid powder (containing the hormone thyroxine) is the only organ preparation still officially approved for use in Japan, and is obtained by rapidly drying the thyroid glands of livestock at temperatures below 50°C. It was not so long ago that dried acetone powder of the posterior pituitary gland was used clinically as a uterotonic agent.
