…Research into magnetism in localized magnetic electron systems, such as compounds of iron-group transition metals, in which the electrons responsible for magnetism are localized on each magnetic atom, progressed significantly after World War II, and detailed research was also conducted on exchange interactions. In addition to the so-called direct exchange interaction explained above, it was revealed that more complex interactions, called superexchange interactions and indirect exchange interactions, are actually at work. Among these complex exchange interactions, there is one that exerts a force that makes the directions of two spins antiparallel, and it was shown that magnetism is expressed in which the spin directions of the electrons on the magnetic atoms change to alternate directions along the crystal lattice, as opposed to ferromagnetism, in which all the spins are aligned. …
