〘名〙 (cream)① 菓子などを作るのに用いる、やわらかい、白色の脂肪。元来は牛乳からとったもの（生クリーム・乳脂）をいうが、他の安価な脂肪を材料としたショートニングなどの代用品もしばしば用いられる。※虞美人草（1907）〈夏目漱石〉一二「夏は氷盤に苺を盛って、旨(あま)き血を、クリームの白きなかに溶(とか)し込む」② 卵、牛乳、小麦粉、砂糖などを混ぜて作る食品。菓子を作るのに用いる。バタークリーム、カスタードクリームなど。③ 牛乳と小麦粉を主材料とした、ホワイトソースに近いスープ。「クリームシチュー」④ 人の皮膚などに塗る、蝋・脂肪などと水を混ぜて乳化させたものを基剤にした白い粘体。(イ) 皮膚や髪の手入れに用いる化粧品。コールドクリーム、クレンジングクリーム、栄養クリーム、ハンドクリーム、ヘアクリームなど。※都新聞‐明治四〇年（1907）八月八日「猶同店には化粧室の設けあり、〈略〉クリーム、化粧水、香水など充がひ」(ロ) 皮膚に塗ったりすりこんだりする家庭用医薬品。かゆみどめクリームなど。⑤ くつずみ。くつクリーム。※ア・マリア（1923）〈谷崎潤一郎〉二「クリームを塗り換へた踵の高い女の白靴」⑥ ＝クリームいろ（━色）※ゴッホの手紙（1951‐52）〈小林秀雄〉「被(おほ)ひの散らし模様は、ディアズかモンティセリ風の鳶色、赤に、薔薇に、白に、クリームに、黒に」⑦ 「アイスクリーム」の略。
