The Story of Azuma - The Story of Azuma

Japanese: あづま物語 - あづまものがたり

A kana zoshi (book written in Japanese). The author is unknown. There is a theory that it was written by Tokunaga Tanehisa. Published in Kyoto in 1642 (Kan'ei 19). One volume. Azuma Onoko comes to Edo and visits famous places such as Ueno and Asakusa with a friend, and then goes to Yoshiwara. He visits the inside of the red-light district and writes down the reputations of the prostitutes. It is the only book that records the reputations of prostitutes in former Yoshiwara from the Kan'ei period, and is a valuable source of information on the customs of the area. There are some notable kyoka poems in the text, such as those about sightseeing at famous places in Edo and the reputations of the prostitutes. [Munemasa Isoo]
