Triceratops - Torikeratopus (English spelling) triceratops

A herbivorous dinosaur discovered in a layer from the Late Cretaceous Period of North America, dating back 68.05 to 65.5 million years ago. It belongs to the Ornithischia order, Ceratopsidae suborder, Neoceratopsian family, Chasmosaurinae subfamily. It had four legs, a total length of 6 to 9 meters, and a weight of 8.5 tons. It had two long horns above each eye and one short, thick horn above its nose. Half of its head was taken up by a large frill that extended above its neck. It is said that the frill also served as a display organ. It is thought that in order to knock down its enemies, it would point its two long horns forward, lower its head using its developed neck muscles, and charge powerfully. The skulls of this horned dinosaur often show holes in the bones, which are thought to be evidence of multiple myeloma, a malignant tumor of the bone marrow. It had strong limbs and short, wide feet, with a hip height of about 2.5 meters. It was the last dinosaur to survive in the Cretaceous period.

北アメリカの白亜紀後期、約6805万年～6550万年前の地層から産出した草食恐竜。鳥盤目周飾頭(しゅうしょくとう)類（亜目）角竜類(つのりゅうるい)（下目）ネオケラトプス類（新角竜類）ケラトプス科Ceratopsidaeカスモサウルス亜科Chasmosaurinaeに属する。四本肢(あし)で全長6～9メートル、体重8.5トン。目の上に1本ずつの長い角と、鼻の上に1本の短く太い角をもっていた。頭の半分が頸(くび)の上に伸びた大きなフリル（ひだ飾り）で占められている。フリルはディスプレー器官としての役割もあったといわれる。敵を突き倒すために、長い二つの角を前方に向け、発達した頸の筋肉を使って頭を下げ、力強く突進したことが想像される。角をもった恐竜の頭骨には、多発性骨髄腫(しゅ)という骨髄の悪性腫瘍(しゅよう)の証拠と考えられる骨の孔(あな)がしばしば残されている。強い肢と短く広い足をもち、臀部(でんぶ)の高さは約2メートル半。白亜紀の最後まで生存した恐竜である。
