Azuma Mondo

Japanese: 吾妻問答 - あづまもんどう

A Muromachi period treatise on renga. Also known as "Sumida-gawa." Written by Sogi. One volume. Published in Bunmei 2 (1470). Divides the history of renga into three periods, ancient, medieval, and modern, and describes the representative poets of each period. It then goes on to provide a detailed explanation of the method of renga, and lists the basic verses that should be used as the basis for renga. It provides a practical discussion of renga in general in the form of 26 questions and answers. Along with Nijō Yoshimoto's "Tsukuba Mondo," it has been respected by later generations.

室町時代の連歌論書。『角田川 (すみだがわ) 』ともいう。宗祇 (そうぎ) 著。1冊。文明2 (1470) 年成立。連歌の歴史を上古，中古，当世の3期に分けて各期の代表作者について述べ，以下連歌の作法について，具体的に細かく説き，また連歌に本 (もと) とすべき句の体をあげるなど，連歌全般にわたって実践的に 26項目の問答体で述べている。二条良基の『筑波問答』とともに，後世尊重された。
