A dicotyledonous plant with sympetalous flowers. An evergreen small shrub. The flowers are surrounded by 7-8 bracts and either lack a perianth or have 3 sepals and 3 petals. They are bisexual or unisexual. They have 3 stamens, but sometimes 2. The ovary is superior and has 2-9 lobes, each containing one ovule. They are berries. They are found mainly in the cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and there are 10 species in 3 genera. In Japan, there is one species of rhododendron that grows wild. They are sometimes treated as polypetalous flowers because they lack a perianth or, when they have one, they are separate. However, because the leaf structure and endosperm formation are very similar to those of the Ericaceae family, they are currently treated as members of the Ericales order.

双子葉植物、合弁花類。常緑小低木。花は7、8枚の包葉に包まれて花被(かひ)を欠くか、3枚の萼片(がくへん)と3枚の花弁とがある。両性または単性。雄しべは3本で、2本のものもある。子房は上位で2～9室からなり、各室に1個の胚珠(はいしゅ)がある。液果。おもに北半球の寒帯に分布し、3属10種ある。日本にはガンコウラン1種が野生する。花被を欠くか、花被のあるときは離生しているので、離弁花類として扱われることがあるが、葉の構造や胚乳のでき方はツツジ科によく似ているので、現在はツツジ目の一員として扱われる。
