This radiation, with a wavelength of 21 cm, was predicted by Dutch physicist van de Hulst in the 1940s and actually discovered in the universe in the 1950s. Subsequent observations have brought new insights into the rotation of our galaxy and other phenomena. Neutral hydrogen in the galaxy has a low temperature of around 100 K, so most of it is in the ground state, which is the lowest energy state for hydrogen atoms. In the ground state, the energy difference caused by the interaction between electrons and protons corresponds to a radio wave with a wavelength of just 21 cm (frequency of 1420 MHz).
