A vast province in eastern Canada. The plains along the St. Lawrence River lie in the south, while the Canadian Shield spreads across the center. Dairy farming, forestry, and fishing are thriving, and the province is blessed with resources such as aluminum, iron, asbestos, and copper. The aluminum industry is one of the world's largest, and the province also has paper, metal, and textile industries. Most of the population is concentrated in the St. Lawrence River basin, and 80% of the population is of French descent, with many Catholics. The province has a strong sense of autonomy, and the independence movement has been active to this day. In 1534, the French explorer J. Cartier explored the area around Quebec City, and it became a French territory, but as a result of the French and Indian War, it became a British territory in 1763. The British enacted the Quebec Act, which allowed the protection of French culture, but after the American Revolution, pro-British residents immigrated and rebelled. In 1791, the province was divided into the French East and the British West. This conflict has had a long-lasting impact, and especially since the 1960s, the Quebec separatist movement has grown, becoming a major political issue. The largest city is Montreal, the capital of Quebec City. It has an area of 1,365,128 km2 and a population of 7,903,001 (2011).
