A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae). It is also called edible windbreak because the young leaves are picked and eaten. It has thick roots. The stems are 0.6 to 1 meter tall. The leaves are compound, twice trifoliate, thick, greenish-white with a bluish tint, and, as the name suggests, resemble the leaves of peonies (Peonyaceae) (for leaf morphology, see the "compound leaves" section). From July to September, it produces umbels and blooms white flowers. The fruits are hairy, elliptical, about 5 mm long, and have narrow wings. It grows on sandy coasts and is distributed from Honshu west of Chiba and Ishikawa prefectures to Okinawa, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. It is a species of the Umbelliferae genus, which has 120 species worldwide and three species in Japan.
