A Noh actor from the late Muromachi and Sengoku periods. His real name was Saburo Mototada. His father was the 6th Kanze Dayu Motohiro, and his mother was the daughter of Konparu Zenpo. He lost his father at the age of 14 and became the 7th Kanze Dayu. Despite problems such as discord with his guardians, Kanze Nagatoshi and Motoyori, father and son, he was active in several Kanjin Sarugaku performances and was favored by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1571. He was also active in copying Zeami's writings and Noh books. Around 1566 (Eiroku 9), he retired and handed over his position as Dayu to his adopted son Motohisa, and later, in 1577 (Tensho 5), he became the guardian of Motohisa's surviving son Oniwaka (Kanze Kuroyuki).
