This is the national art museum in Washington, D.C., and is larger than the National Gallery in London. Founded in 1937, it opened in 1941 with the large collection of the wealthy A.W. Mellon. In addition to the Mellon Collection, which is centered on Italian Renaissance paintings, the Samuel H. Kress Collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, the Chester Dale Collection of modern French art, and the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection of prints and drawings were donated, creating a huge collection system.
