This is a Buddhist ruin at the foot of Mt. Tohamsan on the outskirts of Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, southern Korea. It was built around 751 together with Bulguksa Temple by Silla's prime minister Kim Dae-seong. It is an artificially constructed stone cave made of granite and houses a 3.4m-tall seated Tathagata statue, making it a representative relic of Buddhist art from the Unified Silla period. It fell into disrepair and was forgotten after the suppression of Buddhism during the Joseon Dynasty, but was discovered by chance in the early 20th century. It has been designated Korea's National Treasure No. 24, and in 1995 it was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) along with Bulguksa Temple on the same Mt. Tohamsan. ◇It can also be read as "Seokram." Source: Kodansha World Tourist Attractions Encyclopedia Information |
