A person who watches a performance. There are four elements to a play: the story that is performed, the place where it is performed, the actors, and the audience. In ancient Greece and the Middle Ages, the audience was a gathering of people who shared a common faith or creed. After the Renaissance, as society became more differentiated with the development of capitalism, the quality of the audience also became more diverse. As a result, audiences can have completely opposing reactions to the same work. Examples of this include the "Hernani Affair" between the French Classicists and Romantics, which was triggered by V. Hugo's Hernani in 1830, and the disruption of performances of J. Synge's Les Favourites de la West (1907) in Dublin and across America.
