Magma itypes are classified based on the specific properties of magma itself, while rocks formed from magma types by fractional crystallization are called magma series, rock series, igneous rock series, etc. [Turner & Verhoogen: 1951]. In petrology, the term series indicates the order of igneous rocks, and a rock series is generally used to refer to a continuous group of igneous rocks that belong to a single igneous activity, show clear similarities in chemical properties, mineral composition, texture, etc., and belong to a single igneous activity period [Broegger: 1894, Harker: 1900, Tomkeieff: 1937]. However, there are cases where a clear distinction is not made between magma types and magma series. In 1961, the American Committee of Stratig-raphical Nomenclature recommended that the term should be restricted to rocks in a stratigraphical series [American Committee of Stratig-raphical Nomenclature: 1961]. Niggli applied the concept of series to metamorphic rocks [Grubenmann & Niggli: 1924].

マグマ自身の特定の性質を基準にして区分したのがマグマ型（magma itype）であるのに対して，マグマ型から分別晶出作用などによって形成された岩石を，マグマ系列（magma series），岩石系列（rock　series），火成岩系列（igneous rock series）などとよんでいる［Turner & Verhoogen : 1951］．岩石学では，系列という語は火成岩の順序を示しており，一般に岩石系列とは，一つの火成活動に属するもので，化学的性質，鉱物組成，組織などが類似性を明瞭に示し，一つの時代の火成活動に属する連続した火成岩群に使用する［Broegger : 1894, Harker : 1900, Tomkeieff : 1937］．しかし，マグマ型とマグマ系列とを明確に区別していない場合がある．1961年に米国層序命名委員会（American Committee of　Stratig-raphical Nomenclature）は，この語を層位学的な系列（stratigraphical series）の中の岩石に限定すべきであると薦めている［American Committee of Stratig-raphical Nomenclature : 1961］．ニグリは系列の概念を変成岩に使用した［Grubenmann & Niggli : 1924］．
