It is a private institution. It was founded in Kobe in 1889 (Meiji 22) by a missionary called Lambuth, who was sent from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and became a university under the University Act in 1932 (Showa 7). It became a university under the new university system in 1948 (Showa 23). Its founding spirit is the formation of people through Christianity and Mastery for Service, and it emphasizes Christian education, language education, and international exchange. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it has 11 faculties (Theology, Literature, Sociology, Law, Economics, Commerce, Science and Technology, Policy Studies, Human Welfare Studies, Education, and International Studies), 10 graduate schools (excluding International Studies), and 3 graduate schools (Language, Communication, Culture, Law, and Business Strategy). It is one of the four major private universities in the Kansai region, along with Kansai University, Doshisha University, and Ritsumeikan University. The name is pronounced "Kansei" because the students at the time had an innovative spirit and were used to call Tokyo "Tokei" in Chinese readings. The headquarters is located at 1-155 Uegahara Ichibancho, Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.
