Delphinium

Japanese: デルフィニウム - でるふぃにうむ
Delphinium

A general term for the genus Delphinium in the Ranunculaceae family (APG classification: Ranunculaceae). English name: larkspur. An upright perennial or annual herb. The leaves are stalked and trifoliate or palmate. The flowers grow in racemes, spikes, or panicles, and are mainly blue-purple, red-purple, pale pink, or white. There are five petals, the rear of which elongate to form a spur. There are 2 to 4 petals, the upper two of which are within the spur. The genus name comes from the Greek word delphin (dolphin), referring to the shape of the flower. It grows in mountainous areas, and there are about 200 species distributed throughout Asia, Europe, and North America, with several thousand horticultural varieties. In Japan, autumn-sown annual Consolida ajacis (L.) Schur ( D. ajacis L.) was widely cultivated, but in recent years, tall double-flowered species (2 meters tall, with flower spikes 1 meter long) bred from D. elatum L., D. formosum Boiss. et Huet., D. grandiflorum L. var chinense Fisch, and other species, as well as dwarf species for potted plants, have become popular. Fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil is ideal. Exposure to sunlight is best. Some plants in this genus contain delphenine and other alkaloids.
