...The United States was also hit by droughts in 1974, 1976, 1980, and 1988. In particular, in July 1980, a heat wave that moved north from Mexico caused extreme heat in the southwestern United States, with temperatures exceeding 40°C, and monthly average temperatures were observed in various places at abnormally high temperatures that are statistically estimated to occur once every several thousand years. The heat wave killed 1,265 people, and caused crop damage of $20 billion.
