Antonio Buero Vallejo

Spanish playwright. After the end of the Spanish Civil War, he was imprisoned for aiding in treason and was sentenced to death. He was released in 1946 and began his career as a writer, winning the Lope de Vega Prize in 1949 for The History of a Staircase. Under the Franco regime, he suffered from censorship, but he wrote many tragedies with strong social implications, looking at reality and appealing to the conscience of the audience. He is one of the leading writers in the post-civil war theater world. His main works include Today is a Festival (1956), The Light Window (1967), and The Sleep of Reason (1970).

スペインの劇作家。スペイン内戦終結後，反逆荷担罪で投獄され死刑の宣告を受けたこともある。1946年に出獄して作家活動を始め，49年には《ある階段の歴史》でローペ･デ･ベガ賞を受賞。フランコ体制下で，検閲に苦しみながら，現実を見つめ観客の良心に訴える形で，社会性の強い悲劇を多く書いている。内戦後の演劇界を代表する作家の一人。おもな作品は《今日はお祭り》(1956)，《明り窓》(1967)，《理性の眠り》(1970)などである。
