1916‐2000 Spanish playwright. After the end of the Spanish Civil War, he was imprisoned for aiding in treason and was sentenced to death. He was released in 1946 and began his career as a writer, winning the Lope de Vega Prize in 1949 for The History of a Staircase. Under the Franco regime, he suffered from censorship, but he wrote many tragedies with strong social implications, looking at reality and appealing to the conscience of the audience. He is one of the leading writers in the post-civil war theater world. His main works include Today is a Festival (1956), The Light Window (1967), and The Sleep of Reason (1970).
