Scar-tattooing (English)

In this case, the term “bumshin” is taken in the broad sense of the word to mean marking the surface of the body with a design, and the subcategory of irezumi is called shinbumshin, which is distinguished from cicatrization or scar-tattooing, which does not use pigments. The English word “tattoo” comes from the fact that Captain Cook introduced this custom, which was called tatau in Tahiti in the South Pacific, to Western society in the late 18th century.
