An ethnic minority living in the mountains near China's border with Myanmar. Population: 27,800 (1990). They are found in Longchuan and Lianghe counties in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Their language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family of Sino-Tibetan languages, and they have both Lianghe and Luza dialects. Having lived in close contact with the Han and Dai for a long time, the Achang are generally fluent in both Chinese and Thai, and also use classical Chinese. They have particularly close contact with the Dai people living on the plains in their daily lives. They lived in the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nujiang river basins in northwest Yunnan from an early time, and gradually migrated southward, settling in the mountainous areas and mountainous regions of the present-day Longchuan and Lianghe regions by the 13th century.
