This is a main railway line that connects Wuhan (Wuchang) and Guangzhou (1,096 km long), and runs north to south through the three provinces of Hubei, Hunan, and Guangdong. It was planned at the end of the Qing Dynasty, but was finally completed in 1936 with a loan from Britain. However, it was often destroyed during the Sino-Japanese War and the subsequent civil war, and was not able to fully function as a longitudinal railway line. It was only after restoration and improvement after the founding of the People's Republic of China that it was able to function as a north-south main railway line. In 1957, with the completion of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, it was connected to the Beijing-Wuhan (Hankou) Beijing-Hankou Railway, and the two lines are now called the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway.
