…His father, Vincenzio Galilei (c. 1520-91), was a member of a Florentine noble family of modest means, and though he was a textile merchant, he also had a deep knowledge of music and was quite well known. Galilei initially aspired to become a doctor and entered the University of Pisa in 1581, but he was disillusioned with the scholastic lectures and dropped out. He later studied Euclid and Archimedes privately under Ostilio Ricci (1540-1603) in Florence, where he realized the importance of mathematics in science and devoted himself to its study. …

Later, the theory of 12-tone equal temperament was presented by Vincenzio Galilei (c. 1520-91), who took semitones to be 17:18, and Mersenne, who used geometric calculation methods. On the other hand, 53-part equal temperament, as well as 19-, 31-, and 41-part equal temperament were also devised as purely theoretical values. …
