…In 1892, D. Ivanovskii demonstrated that the filtrate from a bacterial filter that does not allow bacteria to pass through it was clearly pathogenic in tobacco mosaic disease, and in 1898-99, F. Loeffler and P. Frosch demonstrated that the filtrate from a bacterial filter that does not allow bacteria to pass through it was clearly pathogenic in bovine foot-and-mouth disease. Subsequently, it was confirmed that the pathogens of infectious diseases such as yellow fever, rabies, and cowpox could pass through bacterial filters in the same way, and the concept of a filterable virus was established at the beginning of the 20th century. The word virus originally came from the Latin meaning of "toxin" and was generally used to refer to the causative agents of infectious diseases, but since the 1930s it has come to mean a filterable pathogen. …
