… The Kremlin's thick brick walls, with 20 towers and gates, were built at the end of the 15th century, and churches with onion-shaped roofs, including the Assumption Cathedral (15th century) in the Kremlin and the Basil's Cathedral (16th century) in Red Square, are still preserved throughout the city. Since the 18th century, the Classical and Romanesque mansions built by wealthy aristocrats and merchants have been converted into public facilities such as libraries and museums, while modern high-rise buildings such as hotels and apartments line both sides of the main roads, including Tver Street (formerly Gorky Prospekt) running northwest from the Kremlin and Novy Arbat Street (formerly Kalinin Street) running west. Although the reorganization of city blocks has progressed considerably, side streets and back streets such as Kuznetsky Most and Arbat Street near the Kremlin still exude a 19th-century atmosphere with their narrow, winding streets and low-rise houses. …

…　20におよぶ塔と城門をそなえた厚い煉瓦造のクレムリンの城壁は，15世紀の末につくられたものであり，クレムリン内のウスペンスキー聖堂(15世紀)や赤の広場のワシーリー大聖堂(16世紀)をはじめネギ坊主形の屋根をもつ教会がまだ市内各所に保存されている。18世紀以後，富裕な貴族や商人の建てた古典主義スタイルやロマネスク様式の邸宅は現在，図書館や博物館などの公共施設に転用されており，他方クレムリンから北西にのびるトベリ通り(旧ゴーリキー大通り)や西に向かうノーブイ･アルバート通り(旧カリーニン通り)をはじめ目抜きの道路の両側にはホテル，アパートなどの近代的な高層建築がたち並んでいる。街区の整理はかなりすすんでいるが，それでもたとえばクレムリンに近いクズネツキー･モストやアルバート通りのような横町や裏通りは，狭い曲がりくねった街路と低い家並みに19世紀的な雰囲気をただよわせている。…
