〘Noun〙 (Calabar) A climbing perennial plant of the legume family native to Africa. The leaves are trilobular. Many butterfly-shaped dark red flowers grow in clusters in the leaf axils. The seeds contain alkaloids, which have the special effect of calming convulsions and constricting the pupils .
