A Sanron sect monk from the Heian period. His secular surname was Fujiwara. He was from Kyoto. He entered Todaiji Temple at a young age, studied Sanron under Kanri (894-974) at Tonan-in, and was introduced to Esoteric Buddhism under Gengo (914-995) at Ishiyama-dera. In August 983 (Eikan 1, some say 982), he boarded a Song merchant ship and entered Song, and the following year in 984, he entered Bianjing and met Emperor Taizong, who bestowed upon him the purple robe and the title of Hosai Daishi. He then made a pilgrimage to Mount Wutai and other places, returning to Japan in February 987 (Eien 1, some say 986). He brought over 5,000 volumes of the Song Dynasty Tripitaka, a statue of Shaka (a copy of a sandalwood statue of Shaka carved by King Yuten of India), and images of the Sixteen Arhats. In 989, he was appointed as the head priest of Todaiji Temple, where he served for three years. Later, his disciple, Josan, built a Shakado Hall in the grounds of Seikaji Temple in Saga, naming it Seiryoji Temple, and enshrined the Shaka statue that Sozen had brought over. This statue attracted faith as a sandalwood auspicious statue handed down from the three provinces.
