After that, he produced about 40 Talkartoons (1930-32), about 89 Betty Boop films (1931-39) featuring the cute but erotic girl, Popeye the Sailor (1933-42), about 105 animated versions of Elzie C. Segar's cartoons, and about 35 Color Classics (1934-40) to rival Disney's Silly Symphonies. Fleischer's style, which is typified by such strong characters as Betty, who was so sexy that the censorship agency Hays Office warned him, and Popeye, who was a bold and barbaric character, can be summed up as "erotic, grotesque, and nonsensical."...
