...As a result of the Apollo lunar exploration, it was found that the rocks that make up the lunar highlands are anorthosite, and it is believed that they played an important role in the early crust formation of the Earth and the Moon. On Earth, there are three types: (1) those that occur as a member of a layered differentiated rock body such as the Bushveld intrusion in South Africa, (2) those that occur as large batholithic masses (for example, the Adirondack body in North America), and (3) those that occur as layers in high-grade metamorphic rocks of early Precambrian age (such as the Fiskenesset body in Greenland). Those of type (3) are similar to the anorthosites of the Moon in terms of their formation age and chemical composition. ...
