Uzue - Uzue

Japanese: 卯杖 - うづえ
Uzue - Uzue
[1] [Noun] In the Middle Ages, a walking stick was presented to the Emperor, Empress, and Crown Prince by the Otoneri -ryo and various guards to be used on the first day of the New Year to drive away evil spirits. It is thought to have originated from the belief in old trees and the Chinese custom of using a strong rabbit walking stick . Plum, peach, willow, and other types of trees were cut to lengths of 5 shaku 3 sun (about 1.6 meters) and bundled together in groups of one or three for offering. Mizue (salary) → Uzuchi (rabbit mallet). ※Makura (end of the 10th century) 87 "When the letter was opened, two Uzuchi (rabbit mallets) of about 5 sun each were wrapped around the head in the shape of a Uzuchi." [2] A haiku magazine. Founded in 1903 ( Meiji 36 ) as the journal of the Shusei-kai. Edited by Makino Boto. In the same year, the title was changed to "Wooden Sword" and Hoshino Mugihito took over the throne. [Etymology] During the Heian period, the ceremonies of the Imperial Court spread to individual aristocrats, who would give each other "Uzue-jo". Also, the "Uzue-tsuchi" seen in "The Pillow Book" has the same use as the "Uzue-jo", but its shape is that of a "hammer". This custom of giving Uzue-jo continued among the parishioners of Kamo Shrine until the Edo period. →Uzue-hogai
