Around 1650-1705 A French writer of fairy tales. At the age of 16, she married an aristocrat nearly 50 years old. In an attempt to get rid of her gambling and dissolute husband, she and her mother soon falsely accused him of lèse majesté, but the conspiracy was discovered instead, and she fled France, wandering from place to place. She returned to Paris in 1685 and opened a salon, while also displaying her literary talent by publishing tales of the court such as Notes of the Court of Spain (1690), travelogues, and an action-packed love story, Hippolyte (1690). Her eight volumes of fairy tales, published between 1696 and 1699, including The Fairy Tale, were a huge hit with adults as well as children, and together with Charles Perrault's collection of fairy tales, they created a craze for fairy tales.
