The movement (raising, lowering and lateral movement) of any tangible object such as raw materials, parts and finished products, storage and associated handling in production and logistics facilities are called loading and transporting, and the machines used for this are collectively called loading and transporting machinery. The loading and unloading of goods between ships, freight cars, trucks, etc. and wharves, warehouses, material storage areas, etc. is sometimes called loading and unloading, while the movement of goods within the premises of a production or logistics facility or a similar specific area is sometimes called transporting, but in the modern industrial environment, it is better to think of these as a series of movements of goods rather than as separate and independent actions, and it has become necessary to plan the handling of goods based on the concept of comprehensive loading and transporting, including the field of storage, in order to streamline production and logistics.

生産や物流の施設における，原材料や部品や製品など，あらゆる有形の物の移動(上げ下げおよび横移動)，保管およびこれらに付随する取扱いを荷役運搬といい，これに用いられる機械を荷役運搬機械と総称する。船，貨車，トラックなどと埠頭（ふとう），倉庫，資材置場などとの間の荷の積卸しを荷役，生産や物流の施設の構内やこれに準ずる特定範囲内の荷の移動を運搬と呼び分けることもあるが，近代産業の様態においては，これらは別個の独立した行為としてではなく，一連の物の移動として考えたほうがよく，さらには保管の分野をも含めた総合的な荷役運搬という概念に基づいて物の取扱いを計画することが，生産･物流の合理化のうえで必要になってきた。
