Artistic activity in Palermo and its surrounding areas began in the late Paleolithic period, and cave inscriptions have been discovered in nearby Addaura. During the late Neolithic and Bronze Ages, there was interaction with the eastern Mediterranean region, and after the 8th century BC, when the colony of Panormos was founded, there was contact with North Africa, Etruscan, and Greek worlds (Minoan-Mycenaean pottery, etc.).
