Oohanegai - Oohanegai

A bivalve of the family Lycaenidae in the class Bivalvia of the phylum Mollusca. A large species, it has a vertically elongated ovoid shape with a shell length of 12 cm and a shell height of 17 cm, and is slightly bulging on both sides. The shell is thin, yellowish-white, and highly lustrous, with weak growth veins. The anterior edge is straight, with a narrow byssus opening, and the anterior ear is significantly smaller than the posterior ear. The two shell pieces are connected by a large ligament in the center of the interlocking plate. It lives on the seafloor at depths of about 200 to 1000 meters from the Tohoku region of Honshu south to southwestern Japan. A closely related species, A. smithi , with thin radial ribs, lives on the Japan Sea coast.
