A bivalve of the family Lycaenidae in the class Bivalvia of the phylum Mollusca. A large species, it has a vertically elongated ovoid shape with a shell length of 12 cm and a shell height of 17 cm, and is slightly bulging on both sides. The shell is thin, yellowish-white, and highly lustrous, with weak growth veins. The anterior edge is straight, with a narrow byssus opening, and the anterior ear is significantly smaller than the posterior ear. The two shell pieces are connected by a large ligament in the center of the interlocking plate. A closely related species, A. smithi , with thin radial ribs, lives on the Japan Sea coast.
