[Restoring the Olympics and the IOC]
In response to the call of French educator Baron de Coubertin for the restoration of the ancient Olympic Games in order to promote youth education and to realize world peace through sports, the International Sports Conference organized by the French Sports Federation was held at the Sorbonne lecture hall of the University of Paris on June 23, 1894, where the restoration of the Olympic Games was unanimously decided. The IOC was founded with 15 members selected from 13 countries, and Demétrios Vikélas of Greece was appointed as the first president at Coubertin's recommendation. It was decided that the first year of the modern Olympiads would be 96, and that the first games would be held in Athens, the capital of Greece, to commemorate the fact that the ancient Olympic Games had been held in Olympia (Greece). After the first games, Coubertin became the second president, and despite many difficulties, he served until 1925, putting the Olympic movement on track.

　フランスの教育学者クーベルタン男爵の〈スポーツによる青少年教育の振興と世界平和実現のために，古代オリンピックを復興しよう〉という呼びかけに応じ，1894年6月23日，パリ大学(ソルボンヌ)講堂で開催されたフランス･スポーツ連盟主催の国際スポーツ会議で，オリンピックの復興が全会一致で決定し，13ヵ国から選ばれた15人をメンバーとするIOCが創立され，クーベルタンの推薦で，ギリシアのビケラスDemétrios Vikélasが初代会長に就任，近代オリンピアードの第1年を96年とし，第1回大会を古代オリンピックがオリュンピア(ギリシア)で行われていたことを記念して，ギリシアの首都アテネで開催することを決めた。第1回大会終了後，クーベルタンが第2代会長に就任，多くの困難と闘いながら1925年まで在任し，オリンピック運動を軌道に乗せた。…
