A bivalve of the Pectinidae family. It is 20cm tall and 4.5cm wide. The right shell is strongly bulging and yellowish-white, while the left shell is purple-brown and has small scale-like sculptures. When young, it is attached to other objects by its byssus, but when it becomes mature, it opens and closes its shell vigorously to spray seawater and move. It lives on gravel bottoms at depths of about 5-30m from the Noto Peninsula north, from Choshi north to the Sea of Okhotsk, the Korean Peninsula, and Primorsky Krai. Mutsu Bay is known as a production area, and it is also cultivated. It is sometimes collected with a rake net in summer. It is edible. The adductor muscle in particular is enjoyed and canned or dried. The shells are used for oyster seedlings and for shell crafts. →Related article: Itayagai Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
