Owen Lattimore

Japanese: ラティモア - らてぃもあ(英語表記)Owen Lattimore
Owen Lattimore

An American scholar of Asia. He spent his childhood in China. He studied at Harvard University and other institutions, and from 1934 he was editor-in-chief of the Institute of Pacific Relations' Pacific Affairs magazine. In 1938 he became a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, and later a professor. His knowledge of the Far Eastern issue was highly valued, and he served as a political advisor to Chiang Kai-shek from 1941 to 1942. From 1943 he was chief of the Far Eastern division of the Office of War Information. After World War II, he visited Japan as a member of the Japan Reparations Mission in October 1945, and had a considerable influence on the early occupation policy. In 1950 he was attacked by McCarthyism in the Red Scare, but fought back at a Senate hearing. However, he left the United States in 1963 and went to England. From that year until 1970 he was a professor at the University of Leeds in England, and later became director of the Lattimore Institute of Mongol Studies in Paris.
