…The term literally means “descendant of an imam,” but it usually refers to a sacred shrine found throughout Iran where a descendant of an imam or a person believed to be such is buried. It is no exaggeration to say that the religious life of Shiite Islam, especially that of women, is centered around imamzadeh or similarly functioning pir (saint shrine), qadamgāh (footprint shrine), and ziyaratgah (pilgrimage shrine).
